When we looked at and analysed highly effective reliability programs, we noticed some thing that was above and beyond good mechanical or electrical engineering.  We observed behaviours…… Yes behaviours and categorised plants with good reliability and uptime against plants that had all the right ingredients for having a good engineering reliability but not necessarily in the right order.  What do we mean! Well if you take a snapshot of your own behaviour, whether it be around exercise or driving to work, we tend to have certain behaviours, good and bad, that enabled us to do the things that are important to us.  We measure fuel consumption in our vehicles but do it as a behaviour rather than a tick box on a to-do list.  We see the mpg and in our heads, trend it and when we don’t get what we used to get, then we looked at all contributing factors as to why the car isn’t running as well.  Some people have behaviour where every time they set up a journey they will check the water the fuel and the tyre pressure, some of us might do this once a month and then there are some of us that will never do it at all.  We can all relate to this person and he or she is common in industry when dealing with plant.  If your living depended on driving your car every day, all day, like a taxi driver then you would measure it on a daily basis, if you relied on your car for a couple hours a day to get to and from work then you might measure the parameters on a weekly or monthly basis depending on how many miles you do.  And then there’s the time where you take your car for granted and assume it to be always working, always the correct tyre pressure, always have the right oil level, always have the wheels perfectly balanced and then what normally happens is your mpg reduces and your tyres wear out sooner, you inevitably have to take holidays to take your car into the garage or to repair it and have to arrange a lift into work, if this sounds familiar, it’s probably because you know someone like this and identify their behaviour.    “If you monitor it then you can rely on it!  “
